“Vancouver Specials” is a term that was coined for a certain mass produced home in Vancouver during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. There were some specifications that you could chose from but essentially every home had a similar look. Two levels, low pitched roofs, balconies on the front and very similar floor plans. Typically you will find the kitchen and living space on the upper floors along with a couple of bedrooms and extra bedrooms down on the ground floor. These were mass produced as builders were able to make fairly quality homes at a fraction of the cost.
Lately we have seen developers and contractors find tremendous value in these style of homes. The kitchens are easily opened up to create a modern open feel and the ground floor bedrooms are quite easily converted into suites. This has enabled families that wouldn’t traditionally be able to afford a house get into the market as they are able to capture rental income from at minimum a 2 bedroom suite. There have been some very creative transformations as well turning some into loft like homes while others are adding cedar in place of stucco and coloured doors to make their “specials” stand out.
